Clarissa Marie B. Rodriguez (b. 1991), who is better known as Issay, obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, and she was awarded the Outstanding Thesis Award and Gawad Tanglaw upon graduation in 2013. She also studied as an exchange scholar at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris, under the auspices of the
French Government. She has exhibited her works in Hanoi, Ho Chi Mihn City, Manila and Paris. Together with Katherine Nunez, Issay showed work in the main exhibition Viva Arte Viva at the Central Pavillion of the 57 th Venice Biennale. The artist is also part of 98B COLLABoratory, an artist-run space in Manila, and in 2017 she conducted a residency at Lir Space in Yogyakarta,
Indonesia, which collaborates with 98B. And in 2018 she conducts a residency with Bellas Artes. Issay currently lives and works in Metro Manila, Philippines. Issay’s works are autobiographical in nature but always with a poetic twist to avoid solipsism. She connects unlikely dots and fragments to
deal with the complexities of memory, place and identity.
